Food Friday: Broccoli Raisin Salad

My friend Daphne submitted this recipe for the summer salad series. It's VERY similar to my broccoli salad, the difference being her's has raisins, and no cheese.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups of cauliflower
2 cups of broccoli
A few handfuls of raisins
A few slices of bacon
About 4 or 5 tbsp of mayo
Milk
White Sugar.

Quote from Daphne: "Sorry about the lack of exact amounts on the ingredients but I always just "throw" this salad together without measuring anything. lol"

Chop the califlower and broccoli into bite size pieces. Throw in a couple handfuls of raisins and add chopped bacon.

Mix: Mayo with milk to make it runny enough to coat the broccoli and califlower. Add sugar to taste.

Add dressing to salad, toss and enjoy. Another one that I make for whatever party I'm attending and everyone loves it. Easy to make too. :)

Fabulous Fun Finds

I stumbled upon this website the other day called Fabulous Fun Finds. I think the idea behind it is to share great deals, however all I've seen so far are FREEBIE giveaways. Some are super cute. I haven't entered in any yet but I'm sure I will.

Baby Update: 22 Weeks

Hey Everyone....I'm now 22 weeks into my pregnancy.
This week I'm feeling tired, well not even tired as much as sleepy. It seems during the day I just keep yawning and want to sleep. By the time I eat dinner, walk Boone, do a few chores I'm full of energy and 11-11:30 at night I'm wide awake and reading in hopes to fall asleep.
I really hope I'm not turning into a night-hawk or that the baby will decide that night time will be his or her daytime.
Still a few months to go back to normal sleep patterns, fingers crossed :)
=====================
On another note, I'm not sure what's up with Maggie.
I've had a lot of guilt where Maggie is concerned since we've adopted Boone into our family. And more specifically since Christmas when we moved Boone's crate into our room. Meaning he sleeps in there, which also means Maggie doesn't sleep in there anymore.
But the last couple of weeks, not only is she more tolerant of Boone, she's being her normal affectionate self with me, demanding attention from both Kristen & I, and even going back into our bedroom....which is usually sleeping in the closet or like this past weekend, completely invading Boone's personal space, like sleeping on HIS bed

Yesterday morning the alarm went off and Kristen nudged me saying "look!" when I looked, sure enough Maggie was asleep on the far right corner of the bed. Where she used to sleep every night before Boone came along. Where was Boone? In his crate RIGHT next to her. I was sooooo happy. I feel like she's finally accepting Boone and if anything maybe a future friendship :)
Well that might be wishful thinking but I'm being positive here people!

Orange Chair

As I mentioned yesterday, Kristen & I went to a few garage/yard sales on Saturday.
Let me say here that I do not care if I go to garage sales. Kristen thoroughly enjoys them, he cannot get up early enough on a summer Saturday morning with the anticipation of potential finds.
However, I cannot deny that once I am out and about I LOVE getting a good deal especially on something old & interesting. Something unique.
I usually don't spend much, if any, money on a regular Saturday, but every now and then something, just that something catches my eye and I want it, I need it!
This past Saturday it happened....
We're driving up a street and from a distance I can see this bright orange object in the driveway. I'm thinkin' holy cow is that furniture? And I love that shade of orange? And I wonder if it's in good shape? And can Kristen drive faster so we can just get there already?
We pull up, and sure enough it's this awesome orange chair from the 60's. It's in excellent shape (as most furniture that old is since it was actually built to last) and the icing on the cake, it's been re-upholstered and looks BRAND new!
I immediately envision it in our basement, the orange chair with our brown & yellow theme. It would be perfect! It would perfect seating to add to the area where I want to put the computer desk and maybe mini office.
I look at Kristen and tell him I want it!
Then the voice of reason kicks in, that's Kristen's voice saying, Christa it's a chair how would we get it home? And you better haggle down the price some....and blah blah blah. In one ear out the other, I don't care what he says I want it!
So I say..."of course I'll haggle, how much cash do you have on you?" and then I say "well don't you think we could fit it in the trunk but leave the trunk door open?"
The lady hosting the yard sales hears us and wanders over...she says "so what's holding you back?" We explain we're in a car and she immediately offers her husbands truck and delivery services for free (we only live a few blocks away after all) So I say well how low are you willing to go? She's says a number which was EXACTLY what I had in my head and SOLD, done deal!
I tell her my plans for the chair and she makes a comment about it being an acquired taste which leaves me to believe she didn't fancy the chair, thus why it was in such GREAT condition, they didn't use it.
So here it is....our new furniture piece for the basement. My awesome orange chair :)
It's still in our hallway since I haven't had time to clean it up the way that I'd prefer before officially using it.

Then I asked Boone to "up" on the chair, he did and immediately made himself comfy.
I might be regretting letting him up there in the future....

Oh yeah....definitely regretting

Weekend in Review

It was a very busy weekend, it wasn't planned to be that way, it just worked out to that.
Friday night friends came to visit unexpectedly. It was nice actually having a crowd at the house and being able to entertain.
Saturday Kristen & I tried to purchase a rain barrel from our local town but that didn't exactly work out when cars were backed up in all directions for hours waiting in line. To find out they only had just over 300 barrels for sale for our whole region. I have no idea who planned that, considering our town alone has over 8000 people. Anyway....we didn't get a rain barrel, looks like we may have to buy one at full price.
The rest of the day was spent going to yard sales (more on that tomorrow)
And then finally getting our veggie garden ready for the summer. Kristen did most of the work, I just helped here and there. Since he's the green thumb in the family I figure it's better that I help in other areas.
Here's the finished product...we still have some peppers & tomato plants to get in the ground...just haven't quite figured out where we're putting those yet.
The carrots

Our herb pots

Also Boone had dug up Kristen's clamatis flower one day last week when I let him play in the backyard unsupervised. Here's the "new" clamatis plant to replace it.

Kristen also planted up some additional flowers on the side of our veggie garden. Sunflowers & dahlia's

Sunday I went to the digital photography show and loved the seminars that I attended. One was by Gary Fong  who is a veteran of wedding photography. He has since retired from that and now runs a business of flash gear such as the lightsphere
I was really impressed by him, he was funny, serious when he needed to be, ultimately a salesman but overall a very enjoyable personality. I completely understand why he's been so successful.
Phew...and that was my weekend.

Food Friday: Karen's Ranch Pasta Salad

One thing I love about summer is cold pasta salads.
There are soooo many varieties.
Today's pasta salad recipe is one that was submitted by Karen for the summer salad series contest. I'll call it after Karen so we won't mix up all of our cold pasta recipes.
So without further ado, the next installation of our summer salads.....pasta salad!

250g - bacon (fried & crumbled)

Road Travels

I'm LOVING spring this year. Not sure why...maybe I was just ready for the warmer weather after a long very snowy winter.
A couple of times already this spring, while out for a drive or on my way somewhere I've been lucky enough to have the camera with me when something has caught my eye.
This day, I was on my way home from a friends house, they live a bit out in the country (I say a bit because they're only about 10 min from where I live) and I had to stop to let these geese cross the road.
Then this past Sunday I had to go pick up Kristen from his boys weekend, the old cavalier which is 11 years old decided to give him car trouble. So he had the car towed home and I went to pick him up. On the drive I home, I was able to quickly take this photo while we were going by the windmills.
I find windmills so fascinating but creepy, I think I've seen too many scary movies where the bad guy is found out in the country where the windmills are :)
I love how green the grass is and how blue the sky is in this photo :)
This is a straight out of the camera shot, no editing done in photoshop.
--------------------
Also as a sidenote....you might have noticed that my list about Boone has been updated. I did this last night when, let's just say Kristen wasn't all to pleasant with me, when we discovered Boone had dug up his clamatis flower. Which would have been okay if I could have just re-planted it. But nope Boone had completely torn the root from the actual flower. She's a goner :(
Now I have to buy Kristen another one....oops.

Baby Update: 21 weeks

What a difference 2.5 weeks make....this photo I posted of when I was 18.5 weeks
Now at 21 weeks, wearing the same shirt, look at the difference....lol...it's still all so surreal to me somedays :)

And finally a bare belly picture...I'm really self-conscious about these, why I don't know I just am. But anyway here it is.....
I had to turn in the other direction cause I had an itchy spot so my left side had a big red spot where I had just scratched. Oops!
I'm still feeling good though, my feet swell some days but overall not much. I'm sure it'll get worse as I get bigger and the weather get's warmer. Speaking of weather it's supposed to be +28 degrees celsius here today, yeah baby! I think summer might soon be here :)

Long Weekend in Review

Well can't say I have any complaints about this past long weekend. Definitely grateful I don't do the camping thing anymore. It's just too cold & rainy.
Kristen was away from Friday night til Sunday on his boys annual Turkey hunting weekend. He wasn't actually able to hunt since he'd already filled his tags but at least he still had his boys weekend.
He also rented a lense to try out, the 70-200mm zoom lense...look at some of the photos he got.
I call this one "the tunnel"
The sun setting on the tops of the trees
Here's my attempt playing with our temporary toy.

And I also figured out how to use Kristen's camera in manual mode. How's that for the over exposing issue....run Boone run.
I also watched quite a few movies.
Saturday night was girls night and I went to my friends house to eat Pad thai and watch Bride Wars.
Very cute, for the most part it was what I expected with a bit of a different twist at the end.
Then I watched by myself The Women, a bit slow but okay.
And Sunday I watched....Nights in Rodanthe. This movie was by far my favourite out of everything I watched this past weekend.
Okay,.....I was pre-warned that this movie was sad but I was not prepared for how sad. I swear with or without the pregnancy hormones I think I still would have been in sobs.
Then Kristen got home so chick flick time was over :(
We watched Taken....ugh....I'm sorry but the acting...not good. It's too bad cause the story itself I was actually quite impressed with. If you can get pass the acting you might actually enjoy this action-suspense movie.
Then we watched Underworld: Rise of the Lycans...I did like this one.
I've only seen one other Underworld movie and that was quite a few years ago now...or I think it was. Either way this one was alright.
And last but not least we finished off with Bolt...a walt disney family movie.
I normally enjoy animated movies, even if they are more for kids. But this one was a little too kiddy for me. Mind you I still liked it but will not be watching it again. Definitely recommend it for the kids though, super cute :)
And that was my weekend in review.

Blast from the past....About Me

For you bloggers out there, have you ever gone back to your humble beginnings of when you first started writing your blog? I'm started writing mine in April of 2005! I know....can you believe 4 years I've been rambling on and some of you have stuck around...go figure? :)
Well I was going through some old posts and I found this one called About Me, posted June 17th, 2005. In reading my answers I found it funny that some were the same and how some have changed. So today I'm doing an updated About Me post....2009 style. I'm just adding notes to the original answers....where applicable.
LAYER ONE: On The Outside

- Name: Christa

- Gone skating: about a year and a half ago
- Gone skinny dipping: Its on my "Lifes To Do List"

- Short or long hair: Short, I like pretty boys
- Height: Taller than me

LAYER NINE: In The Numbers...

- Number of CDs that you own: Kristen burns and owns most of our cd's (this hasn't changed at all!)

- Number of piercings: one in each ear
- Number of times your name has appeared in the newspaper: twice that I can remember - one for a math award in Gr. 12 and a basketball team one when I was 12 or 13 years old.

Food Friday: Greek Isles Pasta Salad

Happy Long Weekend!
Before I begin with today's food feature I have to talk about Grey's Anatomy.
Wow! That's the way a season finale SHOULD end! What a cliff hanger....cannot wait til Sept :)
Okay now on to food....yummy.
Since the Victoria Day weekend (in Canada) is the unofficial kick off to summer I figured today would be the perfect day to start my summer salad series.
Today I begin with one of Karen's submission's, Greek Isles Pasta Salad. So without further ado, here we go. Give it a try, I hope you like it.
Greek Isles Pasta Salad

They're Back!!!!

After not seeing a bunny for almost a year....he or she is Back!
We had a rabbit all winter of 2008 and then last summer an actual bunny in our backyard.
Once we brought Boone home we didn't see any of them, so we figured our bunnies were gone.
Until last weekend......and we saw THIS!
Boone has been pretty good.
He knows the bunny is there but obviously it's never around when Boone is actually in the backyard. He does know that the little critter hides under our deck and he spends a LOT of time sniffing around and trying to figure out how to get to it.
Even when the bunny is in the backyard Boone anxiously watches from the living room window and paces a bit hoping Kristen or I will let him out to "play"
No playing with Bunnies Boone!

Whatever Wednesday

I check the Smart Canucks website about once a day or once every couple of days. The other day I saw a post about a new TV show that was compared to Twilight. No it's not a spin off from Twilight, but it does go on to say if you enjoyed the books you might enjoy this show.
For more info click HERE

I also put this photo of Boone on my photo blog yesterday. In case you missed it, here it is.
Yep...he fell asleep with a tennis ball in his mouth. No worries, not long after he rolled over and it fell out. I wouldn't let him choke on it or anything.

Baby Update: 20 weeks

Another midwife appointment down and everything still seems to be in order.
To date I've gained 13.5 lbs and I'm feeling really good.
As promised, a photo from our ultrasound last week of the little munchkin.
If you look closely you can see his/her hands up by their face. My friend Myrna told me the old wivestale that if baby's have their hands up by their face then it means they're going to be a happy baby.
I certainly hope she's right! I think she is :)
He or she is definitely kicking up a storm. Yesterday when the midwife was going to check the heart beat the baby actually kicked the spot where she had placed the doppler and it caused her hand to move. Yep we're definitely having a fiesty one, looks like I'm going to have my hands full :)

Weekend In Review

It was a good weekend. Not too busy but busy enough.
Friday night after I walked Boone, Kristen suggested we go to the field across the street from our house to do some training with Boone. On our way back to the house, I noticed the beautiful sunset and had to grab a couple of photos
Saturday we finally broke down and bought a new computer.
Kristen was the WHOLE week literally trying to fix it. Just as we thought he had it fixed & back up and running it would crash, again! So frustrating. We both had enough and off we went to buy one. Kristen decided to buy everything from scratch and build the computer himself. And wow am I impressed! Not only did he do a great job (with the help of a computer savvy friend of ours) but the new features this computer has, well let's just say there were times I wanted to stomp around the house with my arms crossed like a child because I wanted MY TURN to play on our new toy. Oh yeah...it's that awesome :)
We had friends by for dinner on Saturday evening. And yesterday we picked up my brother in law from the airport and relaxed the rest of the day. And of course talked with our Momma's to wish them a Happy Mother's Day :)

And last but not least....the WINNERS of the Summer Salad Contest. Yes I said winners, there were only 2 entries. So BOTH of you win!
---------------------------------------
Daphne & Karen you'll be receiving one of these cute little bags filled with some goodies:
I had to take this photo on my phone since our computer is still down and I'm not able to upload any photos from my camera :(
Both of them entered two salad recipes each so I'll be featuring these over the next 4 Fridays....be prepared, they're good recipes.

McDreamy & Dark-n-Twisty to Wed

Tonight is the night...Derek & Meredith are hopefully going to finally tie the knot on Grey's Anatomy.
It's just so exciting, or it is to me :)
Yesterday my friend Steph sent me THIS LINK
Oh Yeah baby....it's "the wedding website" that Izzie made reference too on last week's episode.
Check it out...it's so cute & funny. There's even pages where you can sign the guest book or RSVP to the wedding. For real!
Cannot wait for tv night tonight! :)
Also today is your last day to submit your salad recipe ideas. Winner to be announced tomorrow!

Baby Update: 19 weeks

And so we got to see the little munchkin yesterday :)
He or she (no we did not find out the sex) is all curled up in a ball. Head by my belly button, bum down a little bit to the right. And the feet sometimes lower when they are NOT curled into the little ball.
He or she is also facing my back so we weren't able to see the face per se. Our ultrasound pic is a side profile of the baby. I promise to show you a photo of it BUT our computer went kaput on Sunday so I've had very limited access. I'm doing today's post at work....sshhhh.
However, not to disappoint I do have updated belly pics...yay!
